Pirox Receives 2021 iF Design Award for Medical Product Design
Yofo Medical’s Pirox dental CBCT received the 2021 iF Design Award in the Product Design, Medical / Healthcare category, recognising its approach to combining industrial design, imaging technology and clinical experience within one integrated system.
The distinction places Pirox among the winners of one of the world’s established international design competitions. In 2021, the iF Design Award received 9,509 entries from 52 countries, evaluated by 98 independent design experts from 21 countries across multiple design disciplines.
Designed beyond the conventional CBCT structure
Pirox was developed over several years through extensive design exploration and refinement.
At the centre of the design is its distinctive top-open, seated architecture. Instead of surrounding the patient with a conventional overhead scanning structure, Pirox creates a more open scanning environment that reduces visual and physical enclosure around the head.
Its floor-mounted rotating structure further simplifies the overall form of the system. Together with the integrated patient chair, the design creates a clear, balanced space for positioning while giving clinicians easier access to the patient.
The result is not simply a different appearance. The architecture is designed around how patients enter the system, how clinicians position them and how imaging is performed.
Simplifying the imaging experience
Pirox was designed to bring multiple imaging functions into a more integrated workflow.
Its rotating imaging structure supports multiple views within the same system, reducing the need for additional external structures and helping minimise repeated patient repositioning.
This approach allows the physical design of the equipment to remain visually simple while supporting a sophisticated imaging workflow.
It reflects a principle that continues to shape Yofo product development today: advanced technology should make the clinical experience simpler, not more complicated.
Where design and imaging technology meet
The iF recognition also reflects the relationship between Pirox’s physical design and the technology within it.
The official iF award profile highlights Pirox’s development around imaging accuracy, reconstruction speed, lower radiation exposure and cost efficiency. It also records a development period of approximately 25 to 36 months, with Yofo Medical named as both manufacturer and part of the design team alongside LKK Cultural Development Nanjing.
Rather than treating industrial design as an outer shell around the imaging system, Pirox was conceived as an integrated product in which structure, positioning, imaging performance and user experience inform one another.
International recognition for purposeful design
The iF Design Award has recognised achievements across product design, communication, packaging, service design, architecture, interiors and digital experience for decades. Today, iF describes the award as an internationally recognised symbol of design excellence.
For Pirox, the 2021 award represented an important milestone in bringing Yofo’s approach to dental imaging design to an international stage.
It also reinforced a direction that remains central to Yofo today: combining precision imaging with thoughtful product design to create technology that works better for both clinicians and patients.
